Yesterday, we attended a 1st birthday party for our friend Luke. I don't think I have ever been to a 1st birthday party before. Very entertaining. When else is someone more interested in playing with the wrapping paper and tissue paper than in what their actual gift is? When else do others play with your presents more than you? It's lots of fun. No expectations of a thank you card, just the joy of celebrating the first year of life, where so much has happened.
The best part was watching Luke eat his birthday cake. This was his first real sweet (I am pretty sure) and he absolutely loved it. As we all stared at him and laughed, he shoved it into his mouth, eyes widening, pupils dilating and a smile on his face hidden under layers and layers of frosting. He was on some sort of high, experiencing something so wonderful that he couldn't control himself. He was taken away at the completion of the piece of cake, along with his entire high chair seat, into the bathroom to basically be hosed off. The following entertainment of his digestion was almost as entertaining. It was a great birthday party.
