FROM THE KALAHARI TO A SPING SNOWSTORM

This week is our long awaited spring break and it came at a perfect time. We were both pretty sick last week and each missed two days of school (one of those days we were both absent). We made it back for the last day of school before spring break. So, we were there for the big research papers to be turned in and the presentations that followed. Our students did a pretty good job. We then had a parent's meeting after school to announce that we are closing the school after this school year. This was a tough decision to make, but one that we felt was the right one. (Let me know if you want more details). Needless to say, spring break came at a very convenient time for some rest and time away to reflect and enjoy time with family and friends.

We spent the first few days of break in Minnesota, and it basically felt like a long weekend at home with some rest, loads upon loads of laundry and church things. We also made a trip to the zoo after church, a regular spring break tradition. We actually worked on Monday (usually a day off for us), cleaning our office and grading diorama's and research papers that were just turned in. There was one diorama clearly put together that morning and another with needless blood (which we said we didn't want); it involved army guys missing arms, legs and halves of their bodies with lots of blood. But most of the others were pretty well done and creative.

On Wednesday, we left town for the Kalahari Resort and Water Park in the Wisconsin Dells. Some friends invited us to join them (for free!) for a night at the hotel and time at the water park. We had a huge room/suite that slept eight and had two bathrooms. It was a very fun break and lots of fun water slides and a water roller coaster that topped my list. It actually shoots you uphill with magical water beams.  I wasn't a big fan of the "toilet bowl"ride that dumps (no pun intended) 9 out of 10 people out of the slide and into the water in some painfully awkward manner. But other than that, we had lots of fun on tube rides and in the lazy river. Tom wisely pointed out that the Kalahari is a desert, rather than a savanna and watering hole, as the park would suggest. Some things seemed pretty authentic inside, such as artwork and a baby lion and kangaroo sadly on display, whereas other things seemed to lack a cohesive theme other than "what we think Africa might be like." Either way, it was really fun and a blessing to have that time with friends.

We left the Dells, after hitting the new outlet mall and Dairy Queen, and started on the short journey home to Tom's parent's. We were pretty sleepy and just talked and hung out watching basketball before a long night's sleep. Overnight, a gigantic snowstorm was brewing and we are now sitting at home amidst about a foot of snow. We watched "Singin' in the Rain" together and are just enjoying some relaxing time together. Tomorrow, we drive down to Chicago for some family time there and an Easter celebration before heading home and facing reality, refreshed and ready to go.

It sounds like a great break! I would love if there are more details about closing the school besides what we talked about in February.
