On Sunday (November 19, 2006), Tom and I officially became members of Church of the Ressurection in Brooklyn Park, MN. We got a phone call Friday afternoon asking if we wanted to become members on Sunday. There is usually a class that you take prior to membership, but they waived this for us (as well as for the couple heading up the young adult ministry there, which we are an active part of).
Pretty tough deal to pass up. Sure, we have a history of passing up some great things (i.e. living in St. John, Virgin Islands for 9 mo. serving with ACMNP;), but only when we feel they aren't what God is calling us to. In this case, it was a great deal and is exactly where we have felt God has called us to (and that has been confirmed many times since). So, pretty tough deal to pass up.
Therefore, we said yes to the invitiation to join the church and to sit at the cool table. Actually gettting invited to sit at the cool table is pretty cool (and has never happened before nor will ever happen again). Even our month of living with the pastors didn't deter them from welcoming us (so obviously you did teach me good manners, Mom!)
So, we got out of our seats upon the hearing of our names and stood up front with about 15 others to be officially welcomed into this body of Christ. One of the pastors (the wife of the couple who we lived with for a month-ish) said something about each of us up there, and shared with the congregation how God had clearly shown her that He had set us aside for that church and specifically the young adult ministry. Then we publically declared our faith and our committment and alignment with the church and it's calling and vision (in the "do you _______?" "Yes!" format). And then the pastors and elders laid hands on each person or couple and prayed over us.
We are pretty excited about being there and are definitely growing in an amazing spiritual environment.
