Some friends of ours from church had us over for dinner a couple of weeks ago. They have a four year old daughter and a newborn son, so it's usually fun at their apartment. When we got there, we quickly realized that they had just gotten back from a day at the zoo. Instantly, I realized that I, too, longed to go the zoo and felt an urgency to see multiple animals in one day. So, I was excited when my family suggested doing something fun together on Friday, which was supposed to be a beautiful day after many hot, muggy ones.
Friday afternoon, we went to the Brookfield Zoo with my parents and my sister. Going to the zoo has been a long time favorite activity of mine and Tom's (individually and together) and we have had many fun trips to various zoos together and with family and friends. We had only been to the Lincoln Park Zoo together in Chicago, but I had never taken Tom to this zoo (Chicago has two great zoos), mainly because the other one was free and in the city.
A sloth bear (who looked like a really big shaggy dog) was our first animal friend, followed by a sleeping mangy lion, a Bengal tiger and a snow leopard. We discussed how the little ravine in front of the animal pens really doesn't seem like a great barrier. Even though you know it must be, and that the distance is just far enough that the animals can't make it over, you are sure that the tiger who is pacing could just launch out and attack you. We got to see a mother and son polar bear playing together in the water, which was very comical and amusing and cute. It was one of the places where you can just watch for 10 minutes and not be bored. We also had a fun, long viewing experience at the seals and sea lions, as they were getting fed and going through some sort of daily check-up. The females were cute and playful and fun to watch as they shot in and out of the water. And the giant, flabby male was also fun, mainly because he was so big and so slow, yet seemed content with himself. We also enjoyed the "Tropics" one of those walk through the habitat of the primates houses. We saw a bunch of other cool stuff and enjoyed the time together as a family.
I love the zoo!

I love the zoo also. Animals are so fun and make me laugh. Thanks for the great word pictures!
How did you know the leaping seals were females and the slow, sluggish seal was a male?
