This is a fairly regular sighting at my parent's house. (A deer, for those who can't make out the picture). OK, maybe seeing a buck isn't as regular as the does and fawns that roam the backyard and apparently sleep there in the afternoons on a regular basis. But either way, we get to see deer on most days when we are staying there, and it's really fun to see them. Tonight, just before dinner, there were a couple of does and then a baby, still in his little polka dots, running across the yard and then stopping to eat and then running some more. We have also seen a young woodchuck, also very cute, running around the yard. The fence in the back borders a major tollway, but the house and yard have a completely serene and peaceful feel and there is an abundance of wildlife.
And on a less happy thoughts note, there has a been a problem recently with people poaching deer around here, either in the neighborhood or in the nearby forest preserve, both of which are illegal. I guess it's a prized head somehow, even if you killed it at the corner of 5th and something, but it's a bit disturbing. One of the large bucks, who probably held claim to most of the deer around here, was one of the victims. I guess I'd feel more at ease with it if it happened more "in the wild," but in a suburban neighborhood, it somehow seems more wrong.
